kh-smilers

PRESS RELEASE

Hull City Council is supporting the latest business venture of Dave Garbera (aged 20), managing director of KH Smilers, as he launches his new book which aims to inspire young people to become the entrepreneurs of the future.

The book, entitled ‘Smilers’ tells the story of how Dave took part in the Young Enterprise Company Programme and went on to establish a successful business whilst at Kelvin Hall School. Now at university, Dave is keen to share his experiences with other young people, including the highs and lows of running a company at such a young age.

The book will be part of a trilogy being developed with the support of the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership and Hull Training.

Councillor Christine Randall, lead member for children and young people’s services at Hull City Council, said:

“We are pleased to support Dave’s latest business venture, and we hope that many of our young people will find it of interest. In Hull we are pleased to be in a position to be able to support young entrepreneurs like Dave, as he himself inspires young entrepreneurs of the future.”

Maureen Foers OBE, Chair of Hull’s Youth Enterprise Bank, said:

“We have seen how Dave Garbera has developed over the years since he started out as managing director of a Young Enterprise Company and were pleased to be able to support this latest venture from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank. Dave has also agreed to be one of our first business supporters for Global Entrepreneurship Week 2009, which is fantastic news.”

Dave Garbera, managing director of KH Smilers, said:

“I am grateful for all the support that Hull City Council and the Youth Enterprise Partnership have given us in developing our business, and now in my new business venture. I want to put something back in order to inspire the entrepreneurs of the future and tell them that if you dream dangerously you can achieve what you want in life.

“As part of my personal campaign to support young entrepreneurs I will be donating some of the profits from sales to the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank so it can continue to support young entrepreneurs like myself.”

KH Smilers produce a range of high quality naturally-grown bedding plants, hanging baskets and decorative arrangements in their own greenhouses and polytunnel, for both individual orders and larger events.

In December, KH Smilers became the youngest nominees in Business Week magazine’s annual European Young Entrepreneur Contest, and the only UK entry to reach the short list. The results are yet to be announced.

Humber Regional healthcare industry on show to the Globe

Posted on 04 February 2009 by admin

PRESS RELEASE  (Source – Yorkshire Forward)

yorkshire-forward

The best of Yorkshire and Humber’s Healthcare Technologies industry has been put on show to a delegation of global trade advisors this week to help raise the region’s profile for inward investment.

The delegation of 14 UK Trade and Investment advisors from the United States, Japan, Europe and the Middle East were in the region last week as part of a fact finding tour of the North.  As part of their tour the delegates visited Hull, the regional hub of Smith and Nephew, the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham and the University of Leeds, home to leading experts in healthcare innovation. These advisors work in international markets, advising businesses who are looking to invest in the UK of the different opportunities on offer in the regions.

One of the delegates, Nadeem Ali-Khan from the United States commented; It has been extremely impressive to see Yorkshire and Humberside’s capabilities within the healthcare sector and obtain a first hand view of how these translate into opportunities for organisations in our market.’’

The group were given an overview of the assets and investment opportunities in the region’s healthcare technologies sector by Yorkshire Forward’s healthcare technologies sector manager Andrea Scully. She explains; “The regional industry is one of the strongest in the UK with major players including Smith and Nephew and Johnson and Johnson DePuy based locally.

“We have particular commercial and research strengths in orthopaedics and wound care, and as the market for new technologies is remaining relatively strong in the current downturn, there are some excellent opportunities for international companies to develop links with the regional industry base.”

Delegates were also given an introduction to the opportunities for overseas investors to develop links into the NHS through Yorkshire and Humber, as well as the opportunity to find out more about the growing regional market for assistive technologies that can support the increasingly aging UK population.

Theresa Lindsay, Assistant Director of Marketing and Business Development for Yorkshire Forward comments; “In the current global economic situation it is critical that we showcase the investment opportunities in our leading regional markets so that Yorkshire and Humber can continue to attract its share of overseas investment.

“We have shown them firsthand the excellent work being done by our region’s businesses in conjunction with our world class universities. This will enable them to advise overseas companies looking to expand into Europe.”
