Opportunity Young people in Hull from Youth Opportunity and Capital Funds – 02/03/2009

Young people in Hull have the opportunity to bid for money to develop their ideas for youth projects in the city. They have until Monday 23rd March to enter their proposals to win their slice of the £400,000 available from the Youth Opportunity and Capital Funds.

Last year 203 projects benefited from the scheme, which provided funding for arts and music projects, sporting activities, IT equipment and awareness campaigns. Some projects established new meeting places or gained funding to go towards a building extension.

One example includes a year nine pupil from Pickering High School Sports College’s Hearing Impaired Unit, who won £2700 to purchase archery equipment and put money towards training for deaf and hearing impaired young people. Daniel Pallister’s success led to schools from around the region taking part in an archery competition.

Youth Opportunity funds have also been used to install a new digital recording studio at the Kingston Youth Centre and arrange music industry days for young people, as well as funding groups that hold a variety of activities and workshops including graffiti art, film and animation making techniques, digital photography, drama and performance.

Councillor Christine Randall, lead member for children and young people’s services, said:

“The Youth Opportunity Fund provides a fantastic opportunity for young people in the city to develop community projects in their local area. We know that there are many determined and ambitious young people out there who can benefit from these funds and help develop activities to engage with other young people.”

The Youth Opportunity Fund (YOF) provides grants of up to £7500 for young people age 13 to 19, and decisions about how to award the money are made by young people from around the city in April.

19 year old Hannah is involved in the panel that selects successful entries. She said:

“YOF helps young people make their ideas become a reality in their community and provides positive opportunities for them and their friends. It also helps lots of other young people take part in opportunities they would not normally get. I’ve made decisions on the bids with over 60 other young people and helped make these ideas a reality. Hopefully I will be able to help more new young people make decisions in April.”

An application pack can be found on the council websites – www.hullcc.gov.uk , www.cluedupinhull.com or from your local youth centre, youth project or by emailing youthdevelopmentservice@hullcc.gov.uk.

kh-smilers

PRESS RELEASE

Hull City Council is supporting the latest business venture of Dave Garbera (aged 20), managing director of KH Smilers, as he launches his new book which aims to inspire young people to become the entrepreneurs of the future.

The book, entitled ‘Smilers’ tells the story of how Dave took part in the Young Enterprise Company Programme and went on to establish a successful business whilst at Kelvin Hall School. Now at university, Dave is keen to share his experiences with other young people, including the highs and lows of running a company at such a young age.

The book will be part of a trilogy being developed with the support of the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership and Hull Training.

Councillor Christine Randall, lead member for children and young people’s services at Hull City Council, said:

“We are pleased to support Dave’s latest business venture, and we hope that many of our young people will find it of interest. In Hull we are pleased to be in a position to be able to support young entrepreneurs like Dave, as he himself inspires young entrepreneurs of the future.”

Maureen Foers OBE, Chair of Hull’s Youth Enterprise Bank, said:

“We have seen how Dave Garbera has developed over the years since he started out as managing director of a Young Enterprise Company and were pleased to be able to support this latest venture from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank. Dave has also agreed to be one of our first business supporters for Global Entrepreneurship Week 2009, which is fantastic news.”

Dave Garbera, managing director of KH Smilers, said:

“I am grateful for all the support that Hull City Council and the Youth Enterprise Partnership have given us in developing our business, and now in my new business venture. I want to put something back in order to inspire the entrepreneurs of the future and tell them that if you dream dangerously you can achieve what you want in life.

“As part of my personal campaign to support young entrepreneurs I will be donating some of the profits from sales to the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank so it can continue to support young entrepreneurs like myself.”

KH Smilers produce a range of high quality naturally-grown bedding plants, hanging baskets and decorative arrangements in their own greenhouses and polytunnel, for both individual orders and larger events.

In December, KH Smilers became the youngest nominees in Business Week magazine’s annual European Young Entrepreneur Contest, and the only UK entry to reach the short list. The results are yet to be announced.

Humber Regional healthcare industry on show to the Globe

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

PRESS RELEASE  (Source – Yorkshire Forward)

yorkshire-forward

The best of Yorkshire and Humber’s Healthcare Technologies industry has been put on show to a delegation of global trade advisors this week to help raise the region’s profile for inward investment.

The delegation of 14 UK Trade and Investment advisors from the United States, Japan, Europe and the Middle East were in the region last week as part of a fact finding tour of the North.  As part of their tour the delegates visited Hull, the regional hub of Smith and Nephew, the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham and the University of Leeds, home to leading experts in healthcare innovation. These advisors work in international markets, advising businesses who are looking to invest in the UK of the different opportunities on offer in the regions.

One of the delegates, Nadeem Ali-Khan from the United States commented; It has been extremely impressive to see Yorkshire and Humberside’s capabilities within the healthcare sector and obtain a first hand view of how these translate into opportunities for organisations in our market.’’

The group were given an overview of the assets and investment opportunities in the region’s healthcare technologies sector by Yorkshire Forward’s healthcare technologies sector manager Andrea Scully. She explains; “The regional industry is one of the strongest in the UK with major players including Smith and Nephew and Johnson and Johnson DePuy based locally.

“We have particular commercial and research strengths in orthopaedics and wound care, and as the market for new technologies is remaining relatively strong in the current downturn, there are some excellent opportunities for international companies to develop links with the regional industry base.”

Delegates were also given an introduction to the opportunities for overseas investors to develop links into the NHS through Yorkshire and Humber, as well as the opportunity to find out more about the growing regional market for assistive technologies that can support the increasingly aging UK population.

Theresa Lindsay, Assistant Director of Marketing and Business Development for Yorkshire Forward comments; “In the current global economic situation it is critical that we showcase the investment opportunities in our leading regional markets so that Yorkshire and Humber can continue to attract its share of overseas investment.

“We have shown them firsthand the excellent work being done by our region’s businesses in conjunction with our world class universities. This will enable them to advise overseas companies looking to expand into Europe.”

The forums have been held regularly for nearly 10 years, and give passengers an opportunity to meet bus operators and representatives of the Council to air their views and improve the quality of the local bus network.

Local businesses beat the recession blues over breakfast

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

4networking2

Local businesses have decided to ignore talk of doom, gloom and recession and are meeting up fortnightly to see if there are opportunities for them to work together, or to create business through joint ventures.

Tom Salter of thebestofhull explains “business has slowed down for all of us, but instead of moaning about it, a few of us decided to get together with other likeminded local businesses. The truth is that there is still business out there, you might just have to look a bit harder for it. Sitting down over an informal breakfast and talking to each other, we often find opportunities that, individually, would have passed us by”.

“To be honest, we could get really bogged down by talk of a recession, but we decided months ago to see if, by sticking together, we could continue to thrive, and, so far so good, some of our members are actually doing better than they did last year.”

Instead of going it alone, the local businesses involved decided to sign up with national networking group 4Networking – “rather than just concentrating on local businesses, 4Networking has put us in touch with like minded business people all over the country, all of whom are determined to fight through any recession, rather than just accept it! Members here in Hull can go out to any other meeting anywhere in the country to pitch for business and we have a regular stream of visitors from all over the country to our meeting, some of whom end up buying services here”.

A simple solution to a national problem? As Tom tells us “what’s the worst that can happen? Rather than sitting waiting for the ‘phone to ring, at the very least I get to lift my spirits and share a joke and breakfast with the others. And any local business is welcome, they can call me, or just turn up on the day”.

Our next meeting is at 8am on Friday 13th February at the Brewers Fayre in Hessle.
